The Office of the Dean of Students

A letter from Mr. Bryce

Mr. William Bryce, Dean of Students

Where to find the Dean of Students:

The Office of the Dean of Students is located in the bottom level of Drury High School near the Guidance Department.

Services provided by the Dean of Students:

Students and parents are encouraged to contact the Dean of Students as needed for information, support and/or concerns. Examples of services provided (but not limited to) by the Dean of Student’s Office include the following:

  • Assignment of Lockers
  • Assignment of Parking Permits
  • Election of Class Officers
  • Information regarding clubs and activities offered by DHS
  • Referral to appropriate school staff and/or services provided by DHS (Nurse, School Adjustment Counselor, Special Education Department, Guidance Counselor, Peer Mediation, etc.)
  • Assignment of penalties related to violation of school rules

The role of the Dean of Students:

In addition to these services, the role of the Dean of Students is to work with students, parents, staff, teachers and administration in promoting the academic, civic, cultural, personal and social growth of students. School rules, in combination with classroom rules and policies, play a large role in creating a safe and orderly learning climate. When students do not honor classroom rules and polices, teachers may proceed accordingly:

  • Discuss the violation with the student and/or give an appropriate warning
  • Contact parents to inform them of the situation
  • Assign teacher detentions
  • Confer with appropriate school staff (see list above)
  • Submit a student referral form to the Dean of Students for repeated and/or serious violations of classroom and school rules

Disciplinary procedures:

When a disciplinary infraction occurs, the student is informed by the Dean of Students of the assigned penalty. Teacher Detentions, Office Detentions, Extended Detentions (3 hours), Saturday School (3 hours), In-School Suspension short term placement at the Juvenile Resource Center (JRC) and Out-of-School Suspension are the penalties assigned by the Dean of Students when students violate classroom and/or school policies. Office Detentions (1 hour) are held daily, Extended Detentions (3 hours) are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturday Detention (3 hours) is held periodically as needed.

It is with sincere hope that by working collectively with the student, parents/guardians, teachers, guidance personnel, appropriate school staff and the Office of the Dean of Students that we can best support your child here at Drury throughout their high school years.
