Drury High School English Department
Reading. Writing. Speaking. These three skills form the foundation upon which the Drury High School English curriculum is built. Everything we do at Drury, from the study of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the analysis of television advertising, is based around the three core skills that will remain essential throughout a student's life.

From 8th grade through 12th grade, students at Drury will develop their reading skills by exploring classic works of literature, contemporary prose and poetry, and supplemental material of all kinds. They will develop their writing skills by drafting essays -- both personal and analytical -- writing short stories and poems, and compiling research papers. They will develop their speaking skills through discussions in small groups, in whole-class settings, and through regular formal speech requirements. At the end of 11th grade English, all students at Drury present a multi-faceted career project to their peers, and at the end of 12th grade English, all students participate in an "English Festival" demonstrating their mastery of the three core skills through individual presentations.

All classes at Drury employ the Collins method of writing, which encourages reflective writing and multiple drafts targeting a select few "focus correction areas." By targeting a few key components of writing at a time, students are able to improve their writing systematically, without feeling overwhelmed by all the other errors that might arise.  The Drury English department is committed to supporting the Collins method, and students in all English classes -- no matter the level -- are provided with plenty of opportunity to improve their writing through substantial practice.

In addition to our core English offerings -- which include an honors level class at grades 8 though 11 and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition at Grade 12 -- the Drury English department also offers a Media Studies elective for grades 8 and 9 and a Sports and Literature elective for grades 11 and 12.

No matter the grade level, or the name of the English course, students at Drury will be challenged to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills, and the faculty will work closely with them to make sure that they have the best possible chance for success.
