Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Social studies department of Drury High School to provide all students the knowledge and skills necessary to become informed and involved citizens of their local, national and global communities and to understand their place in the stream of human history. A knowledge of history is the precondition of political intelligence and essential for sensible inquiry into the political, social and moral issues of human society. (National Standards for History) This objective involves the development of both historical thinking skills and historical understanding and the nurturing of the public citizen and the private individual.
The Social Studies Department at Drury High School has a committed and enthusiastic staff of teachers who love their subject and work together to provide the best social studies education possible for their students. We have a wonderful blend of both young and veteran teachers. Over the past few years the department has worked hard to align its courses with the Massachusetts Social Studies Frameworks and establish common course outlines and unit expectations so that students at all levels of learning acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to become productive and involved citizens of their local, national and global communities. Another important development is the addition of both Advanced Placement and Honors levels of United States History for tenth and eleventh grades.
This year one of our most important department goals is to continue to design strategies and coursework to prepare our students for successful completion of the Social Studies MCAS test. This test is given in June to all eleventh graders and will be a graduation requirement for the Class of 2012.
Finally, the Social Studies department will throughout this year continue its tradition of offering our students the opportunity to participate in well designed and worthwhile Service Learning Projects which both enrich learning and foster personal growth.
